The project FOSSEPS invites european public services to deal with open source as a valuable asset and act collectively to ensure maximum effectiveness.

The european parliament and the european commission has launched the project FOSSEPS ( The Free and Open Source Solutions for European Public Services ), a pilot project in the first Steering Committee, held on 27 january 2002, Charter of the project FOSSEPS (Opens in new window) and was revised for the various initiatives of the project.

The project comprises three innovative initiatives on open source software in european public services. The first is to create the first Catalogue of Applications open source software in europe through a combination of national catalogues of three member states. This will help the public administrations throughout Europe to identify and reuse applications built previously, thus saving valuable time and money.

The second initiative will create an inventory of open source software critical used by european public services. This will enable european public services ensure that the software they are to be a healthy and continue to exist.

The third initiative will use a workshop of the commission to explore how european public services can work together to address common problems related to the use, security and sustainability of open source software.
