The European Commission encourages the reuse of data on the public sector

The European Commission issued guidelines to help member states to implement the revised directive on the reuse of public sector information that should be transpose into national legislation before july 2015. The open public sector can be used as a basis for the creation of innovative products and services of added value that encourage investment in sectors made map based on facts.

The opening of the public sector information (ISP) for reuse can bring significant benefits socio-económicos, through a policy and an adequate regulatory framework. The Directive 2013/37/EU amending directive 2003/98/ec concerning the reuse of public sector information is the basic rule. These Guidelines were drafted with the contributions to the public consultation in the autumn of 2013 and following the recommendations of a group of experts (PSI Group).

The guidelines cover topics such as:

  • The data with the greatest interest:
    • postal codes
    • national and local maps
    • time
    • energy consumption
    • emission levels
    • public transport timetables
    • road works
    • the traffic information
    • Statistics: gdp, age, health, unemployment, wages, education, etc.
  • A licence: when can permit reuse information if licenses, when you can use open licensing without the need to develop their own.
  • The costs: how the public sector agencies, including libraries, museums and archives, should calculate the amount that should collect to re-users of data,
